Couples getting ready to tie the knot have a lot on their hands. The time is exciting, nerve-racking and enchanting. A staple of any good wedding is the ability to preserve its memory with picture-perfect photographs. It’s an important part of the ceremony and the best way to remember the magical time between loved ones.  These ten tips will make sure you’re satisfied with your photos and have you saying “I do”.

1. Select a quality photographer

This sounds like common sense, but there are many aspects of this decision. How do you know who’s good and who’s not? What’s the right price? It’s best to do a lot of research. Wedding blogs are a great place to look. Also look through of real weddings. Most photographers will have a website, so browse it and get a feel for the work. Pricing depends on many factors like location, experience and coverage. Experts suggest to never spend below $1000.

2. Schedule an engagement shoot

Some photographers will offer an engagement shoot as part of their package. This can be a great way to practice some poses for the camera and also get to know your photographer before the big day. During this time, you can discuss your preferences and maybe get some candid you could display at home or at your wedding.

3. Trust your photographer

Handing your photographer a giant list of demands can be stressful on their end. Trust your photographer. They’ve been doing this for a lot longer than you have and will have a good sense on what shots to get it. If you have planned something particular, obviously a little input would be helpful. But don’t try to take over. Allow your photographer to do what they do and be creative. You’ll enjoy the results.

4. Lighting is important

Some couples forget this aspect of photography. Be aware of the light changes throughout the day and how those different lights will affect photographs. For example, if you’re having a winter wedding, remember that it gets dark out early. Try to get your shots at the best time of day. Also take into account different venues. Is the ballroom dark? Are there a lot of windows in the reception area? Always be keen to your surroundings for the best results.

5. Know the Ceremony

The ceremony is undoubtedly the biggest part of the wedding and the time to get the most important shots. It flies by and you’ll likely not remember entire thing, so the photos are important to document this part of the wedding. Make sure your photographer is allowed into the church, so last-minute plans are not interrupted. It’s also a good idea to ask your guests to refrain from taking pictures with flash.

6. Select a makeup artist

You want to look your best for your wedding photographs and a professional makeup artist can help you achieve that. If you’ve never had your make up done by a professional, you will be surprised at what a difference it can make. Also make sure you have powder and lipstick nearby in case you need a touch up. However if there are some blemishes, they can usually be edited out of the photograph for an extra fee.

7. Get creative

Don’t be afraid to think outside-of-the-box. Your photographer is there for creativity and open ideas. The unexpected photographs are often the best ones. Set aside some fun time for this part of the day.

8. Timing is everything

The more time your photographer has, the better. Group shots are notorious for taking up a lot of time. Having to round up many people and make sure that the photograph is correctly done can eat up a large portion of the clock, so delegate this task to a bridesmaid to assist in the process.

9. Feed your photographer

Photographers are people too. When working for eight hours straight, they will often appreciate the invitation to join for dinner or have a drink. The wedding staff are often fed last but if you ask them to eat at the same time as the group, this will ensure your photographer is ready to participate directly after the meal.

10. Have fun with it

Your wedding day can be a hectic day, but try to relax and have as much fun as you can. You don’t want to look back and remember being stressed out and worrying about every last detail. Go with the flow, trust your instincts and do the best you can to make memories that will last a lifetime.

Meet Kate

- nicole G.

I cannot imagine our special day without her. From the moment I inquired back in August of 2020, to our wedding day October 2021, Kate was with us every step of the way. She was amazing at communicating, answering my (many) questions, and making us feel so comfortable in front of the camera! Throughout this process, she\ became a great friend as well. On our wedding day, she made sure we stayed on track with timing, and made it a priority to ensure my husband and I were taken care of. Her positive energy, flexibility, and expertise made the day so much fun and so memorable. Kate perfectly captured our love--her photographs are of the highest quality and have unique touches that represent each of her clients. We are so very thankful that we had Kate be apart of our wedding day. She went above and beyond to make our day everything and more!
